Sengol: Just and fair governance in India's New Parliament Building

In a historic declaration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the magnificent Sengol will find its place within the hallowed halls of the Indian Parliament. This momentous decision comes as a testament to the nation's commitment to unity, diversity, and progress. The prime minister's speech highlighted the profound importance of the Sengol and its significance in shaping the collective identity of our great nation.

What is Sengol?

Sengol derives from the Tamil word "Semmai" which signifies "righteousness."

It is a scepter crafted of gold and silver that has numerous valuable stones set into it. The Sengol is five feet long and is topped with a golden orb. The engraving on the sphere depicts Nandi, a bull that is sacred to Lord Shiva.

Significance of Sengol

Sengol is regarded as a representation of justice, the handover of power, and sound government. On August 14, 1947, it was given to Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation 's first prime minister. This event served as the official handover of authority from the British Government to India.

The scepter serves as a symbol of India's illustrious past and vibrant culture. Its ancestors were members of the Chola dynasty, one of India's most significant and powerful empires.

What has changed with the sengol, then, and why is it making headlines once more?

On the eve of the opening of the new Parliament building, the Adheenam priests presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the sacred scepter, known as "Sengol."

A day before the opening of the new Parliament building, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the Adheenam priests and received their blessings at his official residence in New Delhi on Saturday. The scepter "Sengol," which will be placed close to the Speaker's seat in the new Parliament, was also given to Prime Minister Modi. The Adheenams also gave the prime minister a unique gift.

"I bow before you all", Modi declared as he addressed the clerics. "You coming to my house is fortunate for me. I have the chance to have a darshan of you Shiv bhakts because of the blessings of Lord Shiv."

The Sengol's underlying symbolism

The Sengol represents "virtual and ethical rule" and is highly regarded in the old Tamil texts, according to a background note provided by the central government. Saint poet Thiruvalluvar is credited with writing 10 verses honoring the Sengol and "Songonmai," which is a rule based on "Aram," or duty.

At the press conference, Shah stated that the Sengol specter was created by Vummidi Bangaru Chetty & Sons, a prominent jeweller from Chennai, and that it was housed at Anand Bhawan in Allahabad, now Prayagraj, after being gifted to Nehru.

"It's being brought from there," Shah informed the media.

Shah provided more information about the ceremony that took place on August 14, 1947, stating that Viceroy Mountbatten had questioned Nehru about the ritual that should be performed to signify the transfer of power.

The last Governor-General of India, C. Rajagopalachari, was one of Nehru's colleagues who he asked for advice. The latter developed the Chola model of throne ascension and informed Nehru, who passed it along to Mountbatten. "The Sengol ceremony was conducted in this manner after the latter agreed to it," Shah stated.

The ritual was to be officiated by the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam Math, a well-known Shaivite religious organization around 20 kilometers northeast of Kumbakonam.

He added that the revered Sengol ceremony occurred soon before Nehru raised the national flag and gave the country his rousing speech, "Tryst with Destiny."

The inclusion of the Sengol within the Indian Parliament is a momentous step towards preserving India's cultural heritage and fostering a sense of unity among its citizens. Prime Minister Modi's decision highlights the significance of this emblem in shaping the collective identity of the nation. The Sengol represents the fusion of tradition and progress, celebrating India's diverse heritage while embracing its future aspirations. As it adorns the Parliament, the Sengol will serve as a constant reminder of our shared history, values, and the responsibility of our lawmakers to work towards a stronger, more inclusive India.
