Over 70,000 Booklets to be Printed for Distributing Revised Textbook Changes to Karnataka Schools
The school education department in Karnataka is set to print over 70,000 booklets containing revised textbook changes for the upcoming academic year 2023-24. These booklets will be distributed to government schools and schools following the state board curriculum. The aim is to provide each school with the necessary information regarding the modifications made to the textbook syllabus. Additionally, extra copies will be given to students for reference purposes. The department plans to distribute the booklets within the next 10-15 days.
The revised textbook changes come after the Congress government decided to address certain "controversial" lessons introduced by the BJP in 2022. Out of the 45 recommendations made by the textbook revision committee, the ruling government has implemented 18 changes. The committee included members such as Prof Rajappa Dalawai, Ravi Kumar, Prof TR Chandrashekar, Dr Ashwathnarayan, and Rajesh.
According to the list of revisions released by the Karnataka Textbook Society, the Congress government has removed a lesson on RSS founder KB Hedgewar. In its place, they have reintroduced "Letter to my daughter" by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, with a translation by Siddanahalli Krishna Sharma.
Furthermore, the Congress government has also omitted the works of right-wing ideologues such as Chakaravarthy Sulibele and Shatavadhani Ganesh from the Class 10 Kannada language textbook. Sulibele's work, "Heroes of Mother India," has been completely removed, while Ganesh's work has been substituted with the writings of Sara Aboobacker, author of "War."
In the social science textbook for class 6, the Congress government has introduced several new chapters. These include topics on "Vedic Culture," "Rise of New Religions," "Human Rights," "Women Social Reformers," and "Women Freedom Fighters." Additionally, in the chapter discussing "Important World Events," the government has directed the replacement of the term "religion" with "dharma."
The printing cost for the booklets has not been disclosed by the department. However, the focus remains on ensuring the timely distribution of the booklets to schools. By providing these booklets, the government aims to keep schools and students informed about the changes in the syllabus, enabling a smooth transition to the revised curriculum.
Overall, the efforts of the Karnataka government to update and distribute the revised textbook changes reflect their commitment to providing quality education and addressing any concerns regarding the curriculum. The inclusion of new chapters and the removal of certain lessons demonstrate a conscious effort to promote diverse perspectives and ensure a balanced approach to education.
