
Introduction of More 'Higher Order and Critical-Thinking Questions' in ICSE and ISC Examinations from 2024
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has announced that the ICSE and ISC exams in 2024 will feature a "small increase" in the proportion of "higher order and critical-thinking questions." This adjustment is part of an ongoing initiative to gradually incorporate more such questions in subsequent years.
In a circular issued to school principals, the CISCE stated, "There shall be a small increase in the percentage of higher order and critical-thinking questions in the Year 2024 ICSE and ISC Examinations. This percentage will progressively increase in the subsequent years ahead." The council will soon provide schools with specimen question papers for select subjects specific to the 2024 exam year.
To prepare students for the upcoming changes, schools have been advised to integrate the new question pattern into both formative and summative assessments. The CISCE aims to achieve a "unity of learning" across all affiliated schools. The circular states, "With the ICSE and ISC examinations as the anchor, CISCE intends to gradually prepare students, starting from middle school, to adapt to the desired changes in the learning ecosystem."
The objective is to familiarize teachers, students, and parents with the anticipated changes in learning approaches from the early stages of students' academic journey. Early exposure to these changes will help set the right expectations from schools, teachers, students, and parents regarding the upcoming modifications in question papers, which are expected to be implemented from the academic cycle year 2023-2024.
Gerry Arathoon, the chief executive and secretary of the council, had previously mentioned that more analytical and application-based questions would be introduced gradually, avoiding any sudden shocks to the system. The aim is for these questions to be gradually increased in small increments, allowing students to transition smoothly into the new system.
The CISCE's decision to include more higher-order and critical-thinking questions in the ICSE and ISC examinations reflects a growing emphasis on developing students' analytical and problem-solving abilities. By incorporating these types of questions, the council aims to foster a deeper understanding of concepts and promote critical thinking skills among students. This shift aligns with the evolving educational landscape, where the focus is shifting from rote memorization to holistic comprehension and application of knowledge.
