Can Textbooks be Less Dull, More Current Please? A Parent's Appeal to NCERT

As a concerned parent and product of the CBSE system, I would like to address the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) regarding the content of textbooks. While recent controversies surrounding the omission of certain historical topics have garnered attention, there are other aspects of textbooks that deserve equal consideration. In this article, I aim to highlight the need for textbooks to be less dull and more current, focusing on writing style, the amount of detail, and the relevance of examples used.

  • Writing Style: The current writing style of textbooks often consists of dense text, long-winded sentences, and unnecessary complex vocabulary. This style hampers meaningful engagement and encourages rote learning. Students struggle to comprehend and connect with such content, leading to a lack of critical thinking skills and effective communication. A shift towards clear, concise, and simply written sentences would not only enhance comprehension but also help develop strong communication skills.
  • Suffocating Amount of Detail: Textbooks often overwhelm students with an excessive amount of information that may not be relevant or useful in the long run. It is crucial to assess the practicality and applicability of the content by conducting usability tests with students. By striking a balance and including only essential information, textbooks can become more student-friendly, promoting better understanding and retention of concepts.
  • Outdated Contexts: Many examples and scenarios used in textbooks are outdated and fail to resonate with the current generation. The use of concepts like spinning tops, flying kites, or purchasing CDs may be unfamiliar to urban children who are growing up in a digitally advanced world. Updating the examples to include modern objects and situations, such as bey blades, drones, social media metrics, or online platforms, will make the content more relatable and engaging for students.

Engaging students with current and relevant examples will not only enhance their interest in the subjects but also foster critical thinking and creativity. By incorporating real-world contexts that students encounter in their daily lives, textbooks can bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application, preparing students for the challenges of the modern world.

It is essential for the NCERT to address the concerns raised by parents and students regarding the content of textbooks. By revamping the writing style to be more student-friendly, reducing the suffocating amount of detail, and incorporating current and relatable contexts, textbooks can become more engaging and effective tools for learning. Such improvements will not only enhance the overall educational experience but also equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. It is high time that textbooks move away from rote learning and embrace a more dynamic and relevant approach to education.
