CISCE Bifurcates ICSE and ISC English Syllabus 2024: A Step Towards Enhanced Learning

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has recently announced its decision to bifurcate the English syllabus for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examinations from 2024 onwards. This move is aimed at enhancing the learning experience of students by emphasizing both literature and language skills and promoting critical thinking.

The ICSE English syllabus will now have two separate papers: English Language and Literature. The English Language paper will focus on improving students' language skills, including grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. The Literature paper will include works of fiction, poetry, and drama from a variety of genres and time periods, giving students exposure to diverse literary traditions and critical analysis.

Similarly, the ISC English syllabus will also have two papers: English Language and English Literature. The English Language paper will assess students' proficiency in language skills and include tasks that test their ability to use language effectively in different contexts. The Literature paper will delve into the critical appreciation of texts, with a focus on close reading, analysis, and interpretation.

This bifurcation of the English syllabus is a much-needed step towards enhancing the learning experience of students. By separating language skills and literature, students will have the opportunity to develop their language proficiency and literary understanding independently. This will allow them to focus on their strengths and weaknesses and work towards improving their overall performance in both areas.

Moreover, the inclusion of literature in the syllabus will expose students to a range of ideas, cultures, and perspectives, thereby promoting critical thinking and empathy. The ability to critically analyze and interpret texts is a valuable skill that students can apply in their academic as well as personal lives. It will also equip them with the tools to become better communicators and thinkers.

The new syllabus will also change the assessment pattern for English in both ICSE and ISC examinations. Instead of a single paper that assesses both language and literature, there will be two separate papers that will evaluate students' performance in each area. This will provide a more comprehensive and accurate picture of their abilities and will enable teachers to provide targeted feedback to help students improve.

In conclusion, CISCE's decision to bifurcate the English syllabus for ICSE and ISC examinations from 2024 is a positive step towards enhancing the learning experience of students. The inclusion of literature and a focus on language skills will help students become better communicators and critical thinkers. The new assessment pattern will provide a more accurate picture of students' abilities, enabling them to work towards improving their overall performance. Overall, this move is expected to benefit students in the long run by promoting a more holistic and effective approach to English learning.
