All you need to know about “Labour Day”

Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day, is celebrated on May 1 every year in India and across the world. This day is dedicated to the hard work and contributions of the labour force towards building the country's economy. It is a day to honour and recognize the efforts of workers, who toil day and night to keep the wheels of the economy moving.

The history of Labour Day in India can be traced back to the late 19th century when the industrial revolution was in full swing. Workers in factories and mines faced numerous challenges such as long working hours, low wages, and poor working conditions. The labour movement in India gained momentum in the early 20th century, with trade unions demanding better wages, shorter working hours, and improved working conditions.

The first Labour Day celebration in India was held in Chennai in 1923 when the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan organized a rally in support of workers' rights. Since then, Labour Day has been celebrated every year on May 1 across the country.

On this day, various trade unions, labour organizations, and workers' associations organize rallies, marches, and seminars to highlight the importance of workers' rights and welfare. The main objective of these events is to create awareness among the masses about the need to safeguard the rights of workers.

The government also announces various schemes and initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of workers and ensuring their safety and well-being.

Despite the progress made in recent years, there is still a long way to go in terms of protecting workers' rights in India. Many workers still work in hazardous conditions, receive low wages, and lack access to basic amenities. The government and other stakeholders must continue to work towards creating a safe and fair working environment for all workers.

Labour Day is a day to honour the hard work and contributions of workers towards building the country's economy. It is a day to raise awareness about workers' rights and demand better working conditions and wages. As we celebrate Labour Day, let us also remember the sacrifices made by the workers who fought for our rights and continue to work towards creating a better future for workers in India.
